- Man shot by police in Potts Point
- Two women allegedly assaulted
A man has been shot dead by police after two women were stabbed inside a unit block in one of Sydney‘s most exclusive postcodes.
Police were called to St Neot Avenue in Potts Point about 10.50am on Tuesday after reports a man armed with a knife had entered the complex and stabbed two women.
An officer attempted to use a taser on the man but it was ‘ineffective’, police said.
A round was discharged by an officer after the man confronted police, ‘striking him’, Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna told a press conference.
Footage from the scene shows paramedics loading the man into a waiting ambulance. The man was confirmed deceased ‘sometime later’.
It’s understood the two women, aged 48 and 56, both suffered head and facial injuries consistent with stab wounds and blunt force trauma.
They were treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital.
Neither of the women, from two separate units, were known to the man.

The condition of those injured in the incident is unknown
‘One is believed to be more significant injuries than the other but believed not to be life-threatening,’ Assistant Commissioner McKenna said.
He said taking a life was ‘the last thing’ police wanted to do.
‘I’ve got police officers going home today after being confronted by something very, very violent who are going home safe and well although traumatised by that,’ he said.
Meanwhile, a critical incident has been declared and a crime scene has been set up.
‘Nothing happens here, it’s a very quiet area. It’s dead silent over the time. It is a bit weird a bit unnerving,’ a local told Daily Mail.
The investigation will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
More to come.
