Rachel Reeves pledged today that 2026 will be the ‘year that Britain turns a corner’ after the rate of inflation recorded a surprise jump.

The Chancellor responded after inflation bounced back last month as tobacco duty hikes and Christmas getaways helped push up the cost of living.

The rate of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rose to 3.4 per cent in December from 3.2 per cent in November, the Office for National Statistics said.

It marks the first time in five months that the headline rate has risen – but Ms Reeves reacted by saying her ‘number one focus is to cut the cost of living’.

She added: ‘At the Budget I announced £150 off energy bills, a freeze to rail fares for the first time in 30 years, a freeze to prescription charges for the second year running, and an increase to the national minimum and living wage.

‘Money off bills and into the pockets of working people is my choice. There’s more to do, but this is the year that Britain turns a corner.’

Now it’s time to have your say in the Daily Mail’s latest poll – do you agree with her?

In yesterday’s Poll of the Day, Mail readers were asked: ‘Team Beckham versus Team Brooklyn – whose side are you on?‘ Out of more than 26,000 votes, 65 per cent of you said ‘Team Beckham’ and 35 per cent said ‘Team Brooklyn’.

In a second poll, we asked: ‘Is Starmer guilty of ‘great stupidity’ for giving away Chagos Islands, as Trump claims?‘ Out of more than 11,000 votes, 96 per cent of you said ‘yes’ and 4 per cent said ‘no’.
