POLL OF THE DAY: Should the BBC be allowed to continue charging a compulsory licence fee?

    By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

    Published: 07:09 EST, 22 November 2025 | Updated: 07:16 EST, 22 November 2025

After years of scandals for the BBC culminating in the dramatic resignations of Director-General Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness this month, the corporation is coming under increasing scrutiny over its mandatory licence fee.

The abrupt departures followed criticism over an edit in a BBC Panorama documentary which saw two sections of US President Donald Trump‘s speech on the day of the Capitol Riot in January 2021 spliced together, making it appear he made a direct call for violence.

With Trump now threatening to sue the BBC for up to $5 billion, there are concerns that any settlement could end up coming out of taxpayer cash.

As the Mail’s columnist Andrew Neil argues today, scandals combined with an increasing number of young people switching off from traditional TV makes it increasingly difficult to enforce the corporation’s compulsory £174.50-per-year licence fee.

Here the Mail asks readers whether the fee should be abolished altogether.

In yesterday’s poll, Mail readers were asked: ‘Should Britain have gone into Covid lockdown?’ Out of more than 13,000 votes, 60 per cent of you said ‘no’ and 40 per cent said ‘yes’.
