Angela Rayner has launched a broadside against Sir Keir Starmer as she attacked the Government’s immigration reforms as ‘un-British’.

The former deputy prime minister, who quit last year over a tax scandal, said proposals to make it harder for migrants to settle in the UK are a ‘breach of trust’.

Sir Keir’s former deputy urged the PM to change course or face defeat at the ballot box, as she savaged the Government’s plans to double the time migrants have to wait before being granted indefinite leave to remain from five to ten years.

Controversially, the plans would apply retrospectively to migrants already here – affecting 2.2million people who have arrived since 2021.

Ms Rayner said the proposal championed by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood amounted to ‘moving the goalposts’, saying it ‘undermines our sense of fair play. It’s un-British’.

Allies of Ms Mahmood have said she is committed to the plan, which is due to be introduced this year. But what do you think? Vote in the Daily Mail’s latest poll here:

In yesterday’s poll, Mail readers were asked: ‘Are Starmer’s immigration and energy policies a ‘disaster’, as Trump claims?‘ Out of more than 14,000 votes, 95 per cent of you said ‘yes’ and 5 per cent said ‘no’.
