Kwaku Sintim-Misa is a renowned comedian

Ghanaian comedian cum political commentator, Kwaku Sintim-Misa popularly known as KSM, has launched a sharp critique against the country’s political class, accusing them of hypocrisy and partisan politics that are undermining the country’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, KSM expressed frustration that galamsey only becomes a topical issue when politicians, particularly those in opposition, use it as a political tool.

“It is full of hypocritsy. They are acting like Galamsey has just started. They are acting like Ghana has been all well and good and galamsey just started. All of a sudden. It is back again in the news because politicians are talking about it. Galamsey has become a political tool in the hands of politicians. Especially when they are in opposition.

“People say the only politicians that can be relied on are the ones in opposition, because somehow, they say the right things in opposition. But when they get power, everything reverses,” he said.

He questioned some opposition figures who were silent on the issue while their party was in power, but are now spearheading the fight against it.

When the NDC was in opposition, the was this talk about galamsey and how there was a fight to bring back our rivers and forests… But since NDC has been in power, has anybody from the NDC shown samples of water? But the water is still dirty and toxic.

“Now those in opposition are now all of a sudden leading the fight against galamsey,” he said.

No political party has the will to stop galamsey – KSM asserts

The comedian asserted that no political party has the genuine will to stop galamsey, primarily because the activity has become a source of livelihood for over a million Ghanaians.

He argued that governments are hesitant to take bold action for fear of losing votes, placing political survival above environmental and national health.

In a passionate appeal to political parties, KSM urged them to put their rivalry aside and focus on tackling the issue.

“Keep your politics out of this! Keep your politics out of our fight against galamsey,” he added.
