The Police have arrested 64 suspects for alleged unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition during a special operation at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation also led to the recovery of several firearms and ammunition, including three pump action guns, five pistols and various rounds of ammunition, as Police intensified efforts to clamp down on suspected criminal activities in the area.
The arrests were made by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector General of Police (SOA), in collaboration with the National SWAT, following complaints from residents about suspected criminal activities at the lounge and its surrounding areas, including the alleged open display and possible trading of firearms.
During the operation, the Police identified a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle at the scene and found a pistol holster inside it.
According to the police, no person at the scene claimed ownership of the holster, prompting the Police to impound the vehicle and convey it to the Police Headquarters for further investigations.
One of the suspects, identified as Theophilus Ashon, allegedly presented himself to the Police as an officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Operations.
However, checks conducted by the Police established that Ashon was not a serving Police officer.
A search conducted on him subsequently led to the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Further investigations led the Police to Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was arrested.
A search of Mills’ residence resulted in the recovery of three pump action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges and 54 rounds of 40 calibre ammunition, among other exhibits.
The Police said the suspects were currently in custody assisting with investigations.
They are expected to be put before the court after the completion of investigations.
