PNP joins NPP’s ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration, cites concerns over selective justice

The People’s National Party (PNP) has announced that it will participate in Thursday’s demonstration organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying its decision is driven by the need to defend democracy, the rule of law and constitutional freedoms.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, the party said democracy must guarantee equal justice, freedom of expression and equal protection under the law for all Ghanaians, irrespective of their political affiliation.

The Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, expressed concern over what it described as growing perceptions of selective justice, arguing that allegations involving opposition members appear to be pursued more aggressively than those involving individuals associated with the governing party.

According to the party, such perceptions risk undermining public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.

The PNP also raised concerns over what it described as the intimidation of women exercising their constitutional right to freedom of expression.

It argued that no woman should face arrest, prosecution or harassment for expressing her views in a democratic society, particularly when, in its view, abusive political rhetoric from other quarters attracts little or no accountability.

“The defence of democracy is not about protecting any political party. It is about protecting the constitutional rights and freedoms of every Ghanaian,” the statement said.

The party added that democracy risks losing public confidence if justice is applied selectively and citizens are treated unequally under the law.

The PNP said it stands with all Ghanaians who believe the rule of law must be applied fairly, justice must remain impartial, and democracy should continue to be the bedrock of the Republic.
