Odi Ahenkan Kwame Yeboah, broadcaster for Peace FM

Renowned broadcaster Odi Ahenkan of Peace FM has strongly criticized the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) for what he described as presenting an “empty award” to Kofi Asare Brako, popularly known as Abatay.

During the SWAG Awards held on Friday, January 24, 2025, Abatay received the prestigious President’s Award for his contribution to the growth of sports journalism in the country.

However, Ahenkan expressed disappointment, arguing that Abatay’s immense contributions to the nation warranted a more meaningful and substantial honor.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, Ahenkan shared his frustrations while also calling for reforms.

“After dedicating his life’s work to achieving greatness, where he now enjoys a well-deserved rest while overseeing affairs from home, Abatay deserves a more meaningful form of recognition. If you’re going to honor him, it should be with something symbolic and significant that truly brings him joy—not just a plaque to hang on the wall. It’s time for a change.”

He further called on SWAG to elevate their approach to rewarding person, especially given the resources available to them.

“With prominent sponsors supporting their events, SWAG should strive to go beyond mere plaques. They should provide meaningful rewards that bring genuine joy to recipients, making the recognition truly special and worthwhile,” he added.
