A packed bus has crashed in Queensland with 29 passengers onboard and at least two have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The coach rolled over on the Bruce Highway near the intersection with Rangemore Rd north of Gumlu, between Townsville and Bowen, about 4pm on Thursday.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after 4.30pm.

It’s understood 17 passengers were injured in the crash and two suffered severe head injuries.

Queensland Ambulance sent 11 crews and two rescue helicopters to the area.

Police have closed the Bruce Highway near the crash site in both directions with delays expected to last hours.

One person remained trapped in the bus with fire crews working to free them.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area or expect lengthy delays.
