Musician and close confidant of the late Daddy Lumba, Evangelist Papa Shee, has released documents he claims are the original civil marriage certificate between the musician and Akosua Serwaa.

He made the revelation during a guest appearance on United Showbiz on November 29, 2025.

The move follows a landmark ruling by the Kumasi High Court on November 28, 2025, which recognised both Akosua Serwaa and Priscilla Ofori Atta (also known as “Odo Broni”) as lawful surviving spouses of Daddy Lumba.

The judgement ended a long dispute between the two women over who had rightful claims to perform widowhood rites and manage funeral and estate affairs.

Displaying a set of documents he said he personally retrieved from the German Embassy and later processed at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Papa Shee insisted the papers prove that Akosua Serwaa and Lumba were legally married under German civil law.

He questioned why the High Court dismissed them, arguing that Lumba had acquired German citizenship through that union.

“Lumba is a citizen of Germany through his marriage to Madam Akosua Serwaa. How would he have naturalised if he didn’t marry her?

“If you are a judge and you don’t understand, just subpoena someone from the German Embassy to testify and explain things,” Papa Shee said.

He added that the documents were “not fake” and challenged anyone to prove otherwise.

He accused the court of failing to thoroughly verify the authenticity of the documents.

“In the court, the lawyer was arguing that he couldn’t see the stamp; thus, it was fake.

“But it is up to the judge to verify if it was fake or not. How can the German Embassy issue a fraudulent certificate?” he asked.

The High Court in Kumasi had rejected the civil marriage certificate submitted by Akosua Serwaa on the grounds that it was merely an extract, not the original certified copy required under Ghanaian law.

The defence had also raised concerns about the documents’ authenticity, noting the absence of consular certification and signatures.

The court further held that the plaintiff failed to prove her claim beyond a reasonable doubt. It recognised instead that both women had valid customary marriages with the musician prior to his death, thus entitling both to be recognised as surviving wives.

    What’s next?

Papa Shee indicated that the family intends to pursue an appeal as they seek to overturn or re-examine the High Court’s ruling.

Meanwhile, the family head and funeral planning committee have reaffirmed that, under customary and court-recognised rulings, both Akosua Serwaa and Odo Broni are acknowledged as surviving spouses and are eligible to perform all funeral and widowhood rites which have been set for December 13, 2025.
