Ghanaian actress, Gloria Sarfo, has taken to Instagram to express her deep frustration over what she calls the dramatic decline of Ghana’s film industry, sharply contrasting it with Nigeria’s booming movie scene.

In her post, Sarfo lamented the lack of consistent production in Ghana and the slow pace at which the industry operates, despite the wealth of talent in the country. She pointed to Nigeria as a place where actors like herself could thrive instead of watching their skills go unnoticed.

“Honestly, if you’re in Nigeria as an actor, you’d realize that you’ve REALLY WASTED YOUR TALENT back in Ghana,” she wrote. “As in, people are shooting on a daily basis, back to back, non stop. Meanwhile, in my country Ghana, producers STRUGGLE to even shoot one film in a year.”

Describing the current state of the industry as “CRAZY” and “totally disheartening,” Sarfo questioned how a once-thriving sector ended up so dormant. “What has happened to our industry??? Talents are BEING WASTED. Mercy Lord,” she added.

In the caption accompanying her post, she echoed sentiments she says she’s heard repeatedly from loved ones: that her creative abilities are being underused in Ghana.

“This MUST be looked at, seriously. Look there are lots and lots of talent wasting in Ghana year by year, trust me,” she wrote.

Sarfo emphasized that she constantly finds herself recommending Ghanaian talent to others because she knows the caliber of creatives the country holds. “I’m just here recommending people left right center, cos I KNOW what we have back in my country, I KNOOOOOOOOOOOW,” she stressed.

The actress also praised the ecosystem in Nigeria, saying it offers a supportive environment that actively promotes talent, something she believes Ghana currently lacks.

“Great great talents, who’ll do exceptionally WELL in Nigeria meeeehn. And there are people to PUSH THEM too. But in our CASE… Oh my HEART,” she added.

Looking back, she reflected on a time when the roles were reversed and Ghana was the industry to beat. “It was the other way round just some few years ago, so WHAT HAPPENED, WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. Or is it the NUMBERS, or WHAT?” she wondered aloud.

Gloria Sarfo ended on a call to action, urging her fellow actors not to wait on traditional producers but to consider creating opportunities by producing their own films.
