Bryan Acheampong (L) and Paul Kwabena Yandoh (R)

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Kwabena Yandoh, has expressed disappointment in NPP flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong for allegedly refusing to assist in securing bail for Chairman Wontumi, who is currently on trial.

According to Yandoh, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and a potential presidential candidate of the party, reportedly stated that he is not willing to secure a second bail for the Ashanti Regional Chairman after previously helping to bail him during his first arrest.

Speaking to the media at the High Court on October 9, 2025, Yandoh described Bryan Acheampong’s reported comments as “unfortunate,” emphasising that members of the NPP should unite and support each other, especially in difficult times.

“It shouldn’t have come to this because our common enemy is the NDC, not ourselves. It is unfortunate. As NPP members, we should support one another.

“I have heard Bryan Acheampong say he won’t help bail Wontumi, and I think that’s unfortunate. Maybe one day, when I am rich, I can also help him if he finds himself in trouble, because no condition is permanent. We need to stand by each other,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi, who is being prosecuted by the state in two separate cases, is reportedly still in police custody after failing to meet the total GH¢25 million bail set by the two courts handling his cases.

In the first case, where Wontumi faces multiple criminal charges for allegedly engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) activities in the Tano Nimire Forest Reserve, the judge granted him a GH¢15 million bail with two sureties after he pleaded not guilty.

In the second case, involving additional charges linked to the same forest reserve, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman was granted a GH¢10 million bail, also with two sureties.

Despite these bail conditions, reports indicate that Chairman Wontumi remains in custody, as he has yet to satisfy the full bail requirements.
