All four presidential contenders for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have promised to throw their support behind the newly elected flagbearer of the party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast during the party’s presidential primaries held last Saturday.
The candidates—former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; and former General Secretary of the party, Mr Kwabena Agyepong—accepted the results of the election and pledged to promote unity and support the elected flagbearer.
Speaking after the declaration of the results by the Electoral Commission (EC) at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Mr Kennedy Agyapong, the main contender, conceded defeat and urged his supporters to back the newly elected flagbearer to help the party regain power in the 2028 presidential election.
He said that although he was committed to supporting the party and fostering unity, unity must come with respect, and advised the party hierarchy to ensure that divergent views of members were respected.
“I stand before you to pledge my support and also to accept the results declared by the EC. The delegates have spoken, and I want to plead with my supporters to stay calm, respect the results and help all of us work together to win the 2028 elections,” Mr Agyapong stated.
“I thank my supporters and advise that in an election, you can win and lose. If you lose, you need to accept it in good faith,” he added.
The former General Secretary of the party, Mr Kwabena Agyapong, said the party had a wonderful opportunity to restore the values that inspired the formation of the NPP, so the party could once again be proud of its forebearers.
He noted that the tradition of the NPP had contributed significantly to the sustenance of democracy in the country, and that with unity, trust and hard work, the party would be victorious again.
“As we have always done in the past, right from the polling stations up to the top, let us work together with passion and purpose for the people of Ghana. I am confident that the NPP will become better again,” Mr Agyapong emphasised.
On his part, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, thanked the delegates who believed in his vision and supported him throughout the campaign, describing their commitment as invaluable.
He said he was fully committed to supporting the newly elected flagbearer as the party prepared for the election of its internal national executives, adding that unity would be key to regaining power.
“I am incredibly honoured to be on this platform with my fellow contestants. It has been a fierce battle. This is where we are, and we fortunately have a leader,” he said.
Former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, said he had personally called Dr Bawumia to congratulate him on his victory.
“I congratulated him on the sweet victory he has secured, and I believe that the early fans will come back on track,” Dr Adutwum added.
