Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has lashed out at Kennedy Agyapong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership race, over what he describes as unwarranted attacks on fellow aspirant Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s criticism follows comments by Kennedy Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, who allegedly attacked Dr Bawumia former Vice President and a key contender in the race over remarks made by attributed to him by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Kennedy Agyapong mistakenly attributed the comments made by Chairman Wontumi to Dr. Bawumia and subsequently launched verbal attacks against him.
Speaking in an interview on Owia TV, excerpts of which have been circulating on social media, the former Majority Leader condemned Kennedy Agyapong’s conduct.
“Something that he hasn’t said, you claim he has said and you have been insulting him. Why would you frame something on someone, accuse him wrongly and insult him on top of that?
“So, between the two of you, who is the liar? I even started the whole Adu Boahen issue,” he said.
‘This is so despicable, disgusting’ – Social media users drag Ken Agyapong for insulting Bawumia
Kennedy Agyapong, in a viral video, launched a scathing attack on Dr Bawumia, accusing him of distorting history by allegedly claiming that former NPP presidential candidate and statesman, Professor Albert Adu Boahen, failed to contest for a second term due to ill health.
Kennedy Agyapong rejected the claim, insisting Prof Adu Boahen was never ill and had rather contested against former President John Agyekum Kufuor but lost heavily.
He went further to brand Dr Bawumia a “serial liar” and urged NPP delegates not to vote for him.
In the same video, Kennedy Agyapong accused Dr Bawumia of deceiving the party with claims that he could galvanise massive support from the Northern Regions, arguing that the NPP performed worse there under his watch compared to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He concluded by asserting that he is more popular than Dr Bawumia and therefore the better choice for the party.
However, shortly after the video gained traction, another video surfaced clearly showing that the statement in question was actually made by Chairman Wontumi and not Dr Bawumia.
