Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, is requesting an immediate change to the Fees and Charges Act that will lower the cost of the standard passport booklet from GH₵500 to GH₵350.
The former Akufo-Addo administration raised the cost of the 32-page passport booklet from 100 cedis to 500 cedis in order to pay for printing.
The then-opposition NDC called the raise “inconsiderate” and pledged to revisit it if they won the general elections in 2024.
North Tongu lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized during his remarks on the floor of Parliament House on Thursday, March 13, that the reduction is anticipated to alleviate a strain on the Ghanaian people and will not incur any expenses for the state.
“In our effort to make passports more accessible to all Ghanaians, and per instructions I have received from His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, we are pleased to announce the reduction of the ordinary passport booklet, that is the 32-page booklet from the GH₵500 to GH₵350,” he said.
