The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that his long-standing relationship with late Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah played a significant role in his decision to accept an appointment from President John Dramani Mahama.

Professor Gyampo disclosed that Dr Omane Boamah’s influence was a crucial factor in his eventual acceptance of the position.

In a heartfelt tribute, Prof Gyampo described Dr Omane Boamah as “a great strategist, very smart, very intelligent, very resilient…and above all, a human being.”

He expressed his deep sadness over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Dr Omane Boamah and seven others on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

According to Prof Gyampo, his relationship with Dr Omane Boamah was not just professional, but it was also personal.

He revealed that Dr Omane Boamah was the personal doctor for one of his children, whose survival was tied to the doctor’s professional ingenuity.

This personal connection, Professor Gyampo said, made his decision to accept the appointment even more meaningful.

Prof Gyampo had previously declined several offers from President Mahama to take up appointments or contest the Mfantseman parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC.

However, Dr Omane Boamah’s influence and their long-standing relationship eventually won him over.

“He is one of the reasons why I accepted the offer to serve in this government,” Professor Gyampo said.

The tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Dr Omane Boamah and seven others has sent shockwaves across the nation.

The victims were on a national assignment to attend an event focused on combating illegal mining in Obuasi.

Other victims were: Environment, Science, and Technology Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong; and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.
