Australia-based Ghanaian musician NY Melody has called on men to better understand and appreciate the physical and emotional changes women go through during pregnancy, labour and postpartum recovery.

Speaking on MzGee’s G’Oclock, the singer, who is raising a toddler and a newborn with his wife, shared insights from his family’s motherhood journey, stressing that childbirth is a demanding experience that requires empathy and support from men.

“Women go through a lot when they give birth, and it is something that all men should know and understand,” he said.

The All You Tonight singer also opened up about stepping into a caregiving role during what he described as a postpartum depression phase following his wife’s delivery. He revealed that he took on responsibilities such as bathing and changing their daughter until his wife had fully recovered.

“When she was a baby, for the first six months, I was the only one bathing her,” he noted.

NY Melody believes his environment played a significant role in shaping his understanding of the emotional changes women experience during pregnancy. He appealed to men to be patient with their partners during gestation and labour, and to actively support them through postpartum depression.

“If I was in Ghana, maybe I would have understood it less because of my environment… and I understand it is not easy to be a woman,” he added.
