The former Municipal Chief Executive for New Juabeng South, Isaac Appau Gyasi, has criticised the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over claims that the party failed to effectively utilise its local government officers during the 2024 general elections.

According to him, some of the Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) had strong grassroots support and could have been of immense help to the party in canvassing votes had they been given the opportunity.

He accused the leadership of sidelining them, which, to him, “was a huge mistake”.

“For the first time, I think that the party underutilised the strength of its MMDCEs. The kind of support and also the leadership some of us exhibited in our various municipalities, I don’t think the party utilised that.

“In an election, if you are not given any specific role to perform, it’s politics, my brother. Empower somebody who represented the president on the ground,” he said on June 23, 2025, during Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s meeting with former MMDCEs at the Alisa Hotel.

He added, “It was a huge mistake and I’ll even say it here if I’m given opportunity. How can you relegate somebody who has supervised the entire municipality or district for almost eight years and when it came to the crunch you say ‘you know what you be at number ten position’?”

Appau Gyasi cautioned the party to desist from such actions if it hopes to increase its electoral fortunes.

“Party chairmen come to the municipal chief executive or the district chief executive to get things done on the ground. What are we talking about here? It was a huge mistake. It was the biggest mistake. You have given the person the mandate to look over the entire municipality and when it mattered most that he should take advantage and let him be part of (sic)…” he indicated.
