Reports indicate that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to issue a formal apology to former President John Dramani Mahama over inflammatory remarks made by its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Ahead of the 2028 elections, Wontumi released videos containing derogatory statements about Mahama, which spread widely on social media. The comments drew strong criticism from across the political spectrum, including disapproval from within the NPP.

Effiduase Asokore MP, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, revealed in a Channel One TV interview that senior NPP members are working behind the scenes to apologize. He emphasized that the move is not just for political optics but reflects a commitment to responsibility and maturity.

“In Chairman Wontumi’s case, we will apologize. The influence behind this matter is greater than those overseeing EOCO and intelligence agencies. I place this at the doorstep of President Mahama,” Dr. Afriyie said. He admitted Wontumi went “too far” in the videos and disclosed that he personally confronted him on June 9.

Dr. Afriyie further stated that if necessary, they would kneel before Mahama to seek forgiveness, stressing that the comments crossed an unacceptable line.

Some insiders also suspect that the legal pressure on Wontumi may be politically motivated, suggesting deeper complexities than publicly acknowledged.
