The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally named Baba Ali as its Parliamentary Candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, scheduled to take place on March 3, 2026 in the Greater Accra Region.
The decision was confirmed by the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Divine Agorhom, in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
He explained that the choice followed broad consultations and a careful assessment of individuals capable of galvanising grassroots support within the short campaign period.
According to Agorhom, the party was deliberate in selecting a candidate with deep party roots, strong organisational skills and the humility to engage voters directly.
“We wanted someone with party experience, someone known within the party, who can knock on doors, reach everyone and work with the party so that, within this short time, we can get the constituency to accept him,” he said.
He noted that internal deliberations consistently pointed to Baba Ali as the most suitable option.
“The gentleman we settled on appears to have ticked all these boxes.
For that reason, we believe we are good to go.
We have decided to settle on the constituency secretary, Baba Ali,” Agorhom added.
Baba Ali’s long-standing service within the party was highlighted as a major strength.
The Regional Chairman described him as a trusted and familiar figure in the constituency, noting that he has served two terms as constituency secretary.
He further indicated that the entire constituency leadership endorsed the decision to present Baba Ali as the party’s candidate.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is preparing to hold its own primary on February 7, with six aspirants vying for the party’s nomination.
They include Constituency Chairman Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP; Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal; Dr. Yakubu Azindow and Najib Mohammed Sani.
The Ayawaso East by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away on January 4, 2026, after a brief illness.
NPP leaders say they are confident that Baba Ali’s familiarity with the constituency and his ability to connect directly with voters will boost the party’s chances in the upcoming contest.
