Ghanaian musician and member of the renowned Ghanaian music group 4X4, Captain Planet, has spoken out against the recent destruction of a statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The statue, located at the Effia Nkwanta Roundabout in Sekondi-Takoradi, was demolished under mysterious circumstances.

Photos going round on social media on January 13, 2024, showed the statue with its head severed and significant damage to the pedestal.

In a post on X, Captain Planet emphasised that while he may not be a fan of the former president, destroying his statue is not an acceptable act.

Captain Planet cautioned that Nana Addo was still a favorite among some people, and the destruction of the statue could lead to conflicts between supporters of different political parties.

“You may not like Nana Addo, but destroying his statue is not cool. We have a new favourite but bear in mind that he was also some people’s favourite and this can bring a big conflict between the two parties. He’s not your favourite, he’s not my favourite but he’s someone’s favourite,” he said.

The life-sized bronze statue was unveiled in November 2024 to honor the president, but it has been the subject of controversies since its installation.

Residents had previously called for its removal, citing the incomplete surrounding road and questioning the use of public funds for its construction.

In December 2024, reports emerged of damage to the statue, but local authorities pledged to repair it. Despite this, the statue has now been completely destroyed.

The incident has raised questions about the motives behind the act, with top security officials confirming the demolition.
