Veteran Ghanaian actor, Fred Amugi, has won the hearts of many once again, not through his acting this time, but through his culinary skills.

In a recent appearance on GTV’s Breakfast Show, the seasoned actor confidently declared, “No woman can ever make me go hungry,” citing his lifelong passion for cooking.

Amugi revealed that his signature dish is okro stew, which he uniquely prepares with coconut oil rather than the more traditional palm oil.

In his household, he shared, okro stew is often paired with rice, proving his versatility in the kitchen. Jokingly, he offered to cook for show host Kafui Dey, assuring him that his cooking would be so good, no one would suspect a woman had made the meal.

He fondly recounted how, at just nine years old, his mother assigned him cooking duties for entire weeks. When he wasn’t behind the stove, she had him observe as she prepared meals, instilling in him practical skills that have lasted a lifetime.

“My father used to tell me, ‘What the girls can do, you should be able to do too,’” Amugi said, emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency and equality in domestic responsibilities.

Beyond okro stew, Amugi proudly stated that he can also pound and turn fufu on his own—an impressive feat and a testament to his deep connection with Ghanaian culinary traditions.

While on the show, Amugi also took the opportunity to speak about his latest stage project, Ghana Must Go, written by celebrated playwright Latif Abubakar.
