Beefs in the music industry mostly dominate headlines, fuel rivalries, and boost publicity. While some stem from creative differences, others arise from ego clashes, contracts, or social media disputes between artistes.

Nigerian artiste Burna Boy and late South African rapper AKA were involved in a feud in 2019, after Burna Boy threatened to “deal” with AKA if they ever met.

The conflict reportedly arose after the South African rapper allegedly encouraged xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, following screenshots he shared of hate messages he claimed to have received from Nigerian accounts over AFCON quarterfinal match banter.

Burna Boy has disclosed that he and AKA had resolved their feud before the rapper’s death, though the reconciliation was private.

In a posthumous birthday message to AKA on January 28, 2026, via Instagram, Burna Boy expressed regret that they never got the chance to collaborate.

“Happy birthday Supa Mega. We fell out over bullsh*t even though we squashed it over Twitter DMs nobody knew about, we never got the chance to really link up and do what we were supposed to do. I will regret that until I see you again. Until then, RIP Mega,” Burna Boy shared.

AKA, born Kiernan Forbes, was shot dead outside a restaurant in Durban, along with his close friend, chef and entrepreneur Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.

The pair were reportedly on their way to a nightclub for a performance as part of AKA’s birthday celebrations.

The trial into the rapper’s murder is still ongoing.
