play videoSamuel Chukweze missed penalty in Nigeria’s defeat to Morocco

Nigerian forward, Samuel Chukwueze was at the center of criticisms after the Super Eagles’ semi-final defeat to Morocco in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Super Eagles drew 0–0 with the host nation after 90 minutes plus extra time in a keenly contested game where both sides failed to find the back of the net.

When it came down to penalties, misses from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi sealed Nigeria’s 4-2 defeat.

Chukwueze was brought on late in extra time to energize his side but failed to make an impact, and his missed penalty sparked fury among fans.

It was not just the miss but also his posture and manner that angered supporters. As he walked up to take the kick, Chukwueze appeared calm, chewing gum, something many fans did not appreciate.

He struck the ball with little power, allowing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to save it easily, which contributed to Nigeria’s defeat.

Fans stormed his social media page to express their displeasure, using abusive language and jabs that tarnished his reputation.

Upon noticing the situation, the player deactivated the comment section on his social media account to curtail the abuse.
