Eric Chelle is the new Nigerian coach

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The former Mali gaffer takes over from Augustine Eguavoen, who has led the team on an interim basis since the departure of Finidi George.

In a statement announcing Chelle’s appointment, the NFF mentioned that the primary objective for the Malian coach is to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“The responsibility of guiding the Super Eagles to earn a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals,” the NFF stated.

The statement, however, did not specify the duration of the contract signed by the former footballer.

Eric Chelle, 47, began his coaching career in 2016, with Nigeria being just the second national team he has managed, following his tenure with Mali.

His biggest achievement so far is guiding Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
