The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly plotting $158million worth of improvements to Allegiant Stadium – funded in part by $75m of taxpayer dollars – barely six years after the glitzy arena opened.

Allegiant Stadium, which cost around $2billion, sits on the edge of the Las Vegas Strip and has quickly become one of the NFL’s marquee arenas since opening its doors in the summer of 2020.

It hosted Super Bowl LVIII in February 2024 and the NFL’s end-of-season showpiece will return to the Nevada desert again in February 2029.

Between now and then, ESPN reports, the Raiders want to give their 65,000-seater home a facelift, building a new ‘front door’ by adding a pedestrian deck, a public plaza and an event deck. There will also be improvements to stadium transportation.

Controversially, the NFL giants are said to be eyeing $75m from the Las Vegas Stadium Authority to help pay for the renovation.

That money would come from a fund of taxpayer dollars, ESPN reports. The rest of the improvements would be privately funded.

The Buffalo Bills recently built a new $2.2billion stadium in Orchard Park but that has been beset by problems ahead of the new NFL season.

The Bills opened the doors to its new, state-of-the-art home for a practice session earlier this month. But the grand reveal sparked fury among fans, who shared videos and photos showing obstructed views of the field.

Buffalo also opted to ditch artificial turf for grass and the field became the subject of complaints after the Bills’ 29-14 preseason win over the Carolina Panthers.

One unnamed player told The Athletic: ‘The field is a** right now. But it’s early.’
