Arguments over Brexit, transgender rights and immigration are some of the top reasons British couples have divorced, a study has revealed.

Conflict over ‘culture war’ topics and politics are destroying relationships, the research found.

More than two in five (42 per cent) of divorced Britons said disagreements over issues – including gender identity, cancel culture, immigration, climate activism and political correctness – had contributed to the breakdown of their marriage.

Political correctness and ‘wokeness’ (41 per cent) and immigration (41 per cent) were the most common triggers for conflict.

This was followed by transgender issues (31 per cent), cancel culture (26 per cent), and climate activism (20 per cent).

Nearly one in five (17 per cent) said arguments about Donald Trump had contributed to their relationship breakdown.

While 15 per cent said the MeToo movement and 14 per cent pointed to conversations about the Middle East.

Brexit also continues to leave its mark on the nation’s love lives as a quarter (24 per cent) of respondents said that arguments with their former partner on the topic had led to their demise.

Rows involved how they or the other had voted, views on leaving or remaining or the impact of the 2016 vote.

While more than one in four (26 per cent) admitted they would avoid dating someone who voted differently to them on Brexit.

The survey of recently divorced Britons was conducted in September 2025 by UK health technology company 32Co to coincide with the launch of its Aerox Sleep Centres, which offer non-invasive treatment for snoring, across the UK.

They also found couples faced challenges in the bedroom as nearly half (47 per cent) consider snoring or symptoms associated with sleep apnoea to have been a contributory factor to the breakdown of their relationship.

A staggering 85 per cent admitted they went through ‘sleep divorces’ where they sleep in separate rooms, which ultimately led to their separation.
