The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will now be held every four years starting in 2028, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, announced on Saturday.

The CAF Executive Committee’s decision means that following the 2027 edition in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the four-year cycle will commence in 2028, with the next tournament scheduled for 2032.

Dr Motsepe made the announcement in Rabat ahead of the 2025 AFCON, which began yesterday. He also revealed plans for a new African Nations League (ANL), set to start in 2029. The ANL will be played during FIFA windows in September and October, with finals scheduled for November each year.

The ANL will feature 54 teams divided across four geographical zones – North, West, Central, and Southern Africa – with regional winners advancing to compete in the later stages of the competition.

“We want to make sure that there will be synchronisation with the global calendar so that African players are released by their clubs during the FIFA International window for the African Nations League,” Dr Motsepe explained.

He added that the move would enhance commercial viability, attract more partners, and strengthen collaboration with FIFA.–GNA
