Former Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has called on Ghanaians to continue supporting the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the national team should never be underestimated despite recent struggles.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, Nyantakyi admitted concerns surrounding the team are understandable following a disappointing run of five consecutive defeats and group-stage exits at their last three major international tournaments. Ghana have also been handed a difficult Group L draw alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

However, Nyantakyi believes the Black Stars have a history of performing best when expectations are low. The former GFA boss, who supervised Ghana’s memorable FIFA World Cup campaigns in 2006 and 2010, said the team is capable of springing surprises on the global stage once again.

“As I told somebody yesterday, never write off any Ghana team. The time that you have little faith in them is when they spring surprises,” he said.

The Black Stars have already opened camp with 28 players as preparations intensify for the tournament. Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to reduce the squad to 26 players before Ghana’s international friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 2.

Nyantakyi believes unity and support could inspire another memorable World Cup campaign for Ghana.
