The California native bet $2.50 on a machine at Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa and won almost $500,000, according to 8News.
According to Casino.org, the odds of winning any money on a slot machine typically fall between 85 and 98 percent, though machines can be programmed to whatever odds the owner prefers.
Regardless of programmed odds, all slot machines are 100 percent random and there is no fool-proof way to predict winnings or strategize a multi-million dollar spin.
Getting lucky is rare. But millionaires like the Nevada gambler can often collect their winnings in a discounted lump sump or in an installments on a multi-year payment plan.
The casino has posted about multiple other big winners this year including a $40,000 jackpot on a slot machine after a $5.50 bet.
