Social media, particularly Facebook, has been set ablaze following the announcement by Hajia Amina Adams, wife of the late National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Naser Toure Mahama, of her intention to contest the constituency seat.
After the passing of her husband, calls emerged within the party urging her to step forward. Responding to these appeals, Hajia Amina officially declared her intention to run on January 22, 2026.
Her decision has sharply divided opinion online. While some netizens argue that her move comes too soon after her husband’s death, others believe it is fitting that she continues his legacy, given his years of dedicated service to the constituency.
The declaration has since sparked heated debate, with supporters and critics clashing across social media platforms.
“Some of these mistakes should be well looked out for. NDC leadership should learn from every mistake, no matter how well you work, and allow some of these things to happen, same people will vote against you, so be vigilant,” one user lamented.
Another user wrote, “She will win because all our sympathy votes will go to her. All the best, Hajia.”
Conversely, another commenter argued, “The good people of Nima should demonstrate to this woman that the parliamentary seat is not part of her late husband’s will. What has the husband done for the area? She should step aside.”
Ahmed Adam Hadir also criticised the decision from a religious perspective, stating, “Today it is happening to us Muslims. SubhanaAllah. Iddah and its essence have been ignored in the pursuit of dunya. A man who spent his whole life with you as your protector, maintainer, provider, husband, and father…
“Today, you are finding it difficult to dedicate four months and ten days for him, but rather have quickly moved on and become preoccupied with dunya and politics. Indeed, the world is coming to an end. This is a wake-up call for all Muslim men: don’t die thinking your wife will genuinely mourn and pray for you. Perform good deeds for yourself before you die. Allah safeguard us. Ameen.”
