The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has urged families and political groups to ensure that individuals chosen to replace deceased or unavailable relatives in public office are genuinely willing and prepared to serve.

Speaking on the issue of succession in politics, the MP warned that imposing leadership roles on individuals who lack interest or readiness often results in poor performance, frustration, and weakened representation for the community.

He stressed that leadership should be grounded in competence, commitment and genuine passion—not family sentiment or emotional pressure.

“To choose someone just because the family insists is not enough.

The person must be willing, ready and passionate about serving,” Toobu said, calling on families to prioritise capable candidates who can effectively advance community interests.

He added that decisions regarding political succession must focus on the long-term well-being of constituents rather than short-term emotions or external influences.
