The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, was honoured on Tuesday by the management and staff of the National Theatre during the ongoing Ghana Theatre Festival Awards Night Ceremony.

The ceremony also celebrated several retired staff members for their invaluable contributions to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

The event, themed “Showcasing the Rich Diversity of Ghanaian Culture Through Performing Arts,” highlighted the role of the performing arts in national development and honoured individuals whose dedication has shaped the industry.

Executive Director of the National Theatre, Henry Herbert Malm, commended both current and former staff for their service.

“One cannot walk through the corridors of the National Theatre without seeing their efforts in promoting the nation’s culture,” he said, adding, “a nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for.”

Among those recognised were Mr. Brimah Watara, Dzifa Glikpoe, Juliana Acheampong Hanson, Abubakari Salifu Merigah, Patrick Nana Adu Darku, Felix Yaw Coblavi, Gabriel Kwesi Wilson, Samuel Ashie, and the current board chair of the Theatre, Korkor Amarteokor Amarteifio.

In her response, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, herself a former actor and long-time contributor to the National Theatre, praised the institution’s leadership under Malm and reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting the arts.

She also announced that discussions were underway with the Chinese Ambassador to secure renovations for the Theatre, expressing hope that such engagements should see visible results soon to enhance the fortunes of the sector.

The Ghana Theatre Festival continues this week, serving as a vibrant platform to celebrate Ghana’s performing arts and honour those who have preserved and promoted the country’s cultural identity.
