The Nana Boahen Korkor Royal Family of the Sunyani Traditional Council (STC) in the Bono Region has vehemently refuted media reports suggesting that the protracted Sunyani chieftaincy dispute has been resolved.

According to the Abusuapanyin of the Royal Family, Nana Obiri Yeboah, the substantive issue concerning the selection and subsequent installation of the rightful claimant to the Sunyani Stool, which had become the bone of contention, is currently pending before the Bono Regional House of Chiefs Judicial Committee.

“We, members of the Nana Boahen Korkor Royal Family, wish to restate our position from January 2025 till now that, according to our customs, the selection of a new candidate to be enstooled as a chief is the sole responsibility of the Queenmother. No outside entity or authority, including the Sunyani Traditional Council, can impose a chief on the Royal Family. Therefore, we do not recognise Mr Yaw Agyare as the chief of Sunyani. That is why we have taken the matter to court,” Nana Obiri Yeboah stated.

Addressing journalists on Friday, the Abusuapanyin explained that a press conference held on February 3, 2026, by the Traditional Council, attended by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim; the Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboah; the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Vincent Antwi; and other officials, was to announce the revocation of the purported suspension of the Queenmother by the Acting President of the Council, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng.

It would be recalled that the Queenmother of the Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Akosua Asor Sika Dua Brayie, was suspended last year by the Acting President and Akwamuhene of the Council following her attempted installation of a rival chief other than the current disputed Omanhene, Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor.

The Abusuapanyin further stated that the purported suspension of the Queenmother by the Acting President of the STC was out of order and of no effect, arguing that he lacked the capacity to do so.

“He is not a member of the Royal Family and therefore has no authority to intrude into our affairs. In any case, it is the Abusuapanyin of the Royal Family who has the power to prefer charges against the Queenmother, not the Akwamuhene,” he stressed.

He recalled that on August 14, 2025, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs invited some members of the Royal Family to Accra in an attempt to defuse rising tensions emanating from the chieftaincy dispute between the feuding factions.

At the meeting, he said, a 10-point roadmap was drawn up to help de-escalate tensions, including the immediate lifting of the suspension of the Queenmother.

Nana Obiri Yeboah maintained that at no point in their engagements with the Minister was the chieftaincy dispute declared resolved and urged the public to disregard what he described as misleading reportage.

He further alleged that the Acting President of the STC took advantage of the situation to address the media in a manner suggesting that the cases pending before the courts had been withdrawn.

He appealed to the Judicial Committee of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs to expedite action on the matter to bring finality to the dispute, stressing that such action would help ensure peace and stability in the Sunyani Municipality.
