    Dear Vanessa,

When I was offered a global role with my company, I genuinely felt like I’d won the lottery.

It was everything I’d worked towards for years. More responsibility, more opportunity and, for the first time in my career, real financial security. I couldn’t wait to tell my husband.

He hugged me, opened a bottle of champagne and told me how proud he was. We talked about travelling more, paying off our home sooner and finally feeling like all the hard work had been worth it.

I thought this promotion was going to change our lives.

It did. Just not in the way I imagined.

At first, everything seemed normal. But then little comments started creeping in.

    ‘I suppose you’re paying.’

My husband couldn’t handle my pay rise. Two years later, my marriage was over: VANESSA STOYKOV

‘Your job’s the important one now.’

    ‘The boss has arrived.’

He’d laugh after saying them, so I laughed too. But the jokes never stopped.

Whenever friends asked about my work, he’d change the subject. If someone congratulated me, he’d go quiet for the rest of the evening.

I kept telling myself he was adjusting.

    Then the arguments started.

He said I’d changed. That I cared more about work than our family. That I thought I was better than him.

The truth was that I hadn’t changed at all.

I was still trying to juggle everything at home. I still organised birthdays, worried about the kids and carried most of the mental load. If anything, I was trying harder because I felt guilty about travelling more and working longer hours.

    The guilt surprised me.

I’d worked towards this opportunity for years, yet instead of feeling proud, I found myself apologising for it.

I stopped talking about work because I didn’t want to upset him. I turned down networking events. I even questioned whether accepting the promotion had been the right decision.

Nothing seemed to make a difference.

One evening, after another argument, he finally admitted what was really bothering him.

He said he no longer knew where he fitted into our relationship.

He said he’d always imagined he would be the successful one, and watching my career take off made him feel like he’d failed.

That broke my heart. I never wanted to compete with him; I wanted us both to succeed.

We spent almost two years trying to fix things. We went to counselling, planned weekends away and promised we’d communicate better.

But resentment is hard to overcome once it takes hold. Last year, we separated.

People still tell me how lucky I am to have landed such an incredible role.

In many ways, I am. But I also lost the person I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with.

I still wonder whether our marriage would have survived if I’d never accepted that promotion.

Did my success destroy our relationship? Or did it simply reveal something that had always been there?

    Amanda

    Vanessa says:

Amanda, I don’t believe your promotion destroyed your marriage.

I think it exposed a conversation that many couples never have.

We often assume that when more money comes into a household, everyone wins. But promotions, inheritances, retirement, redundancy and other major financial changes don’t just change our bank balance – they change how we see ourselves and each other.

These are what I call financial flashpoints. They’re moments when our emotions can drive our decisions far more than the numbers ever do.

For many people, their career isn’t just about earning an income. It’s tied to identity, confidence and purpose.

Your husband wasn’t necessarily struggling with your success. He was struggling with what your success made him believe about himself.

Sadly, instead of saying, ‘I’m feeling insecure,’ those emotions came out as criticism, resentment and distance.

At the same time, you did something I see many successful women do. You made yourself smaller to make someone else feel bigger.

You stopped celebrating your achievements. You apologised for opportunities you’d earned. You carried guilt that didn’t belong to you.

No healthy relationship should require either person to shrink so the other feels comfortable.

The strongest couples I’ve met don’t keep score over who earns more. They understand that over a lifetime, there will be seasons when one person’s career takes off and seasons when the other’s does.

The question isn’t who earns the bigger salary. The question is whether both people still feel respected, valued and supported.

Success doesn’t destroy strong relationships – it tests them.

Sometimes that test strengthens the partnership. Sometimes it reveals cracks that have been there all along.

Whether you’re together or you’ve decided to separate, one thing is certain: avoiding difficult conversations about money only makes them harder. The earlier you can talk honestly about finances, expectations and your future, the better your chances of making decisions you’ll both be comfortable with.

If you’re navigating separation or divorce, I’ve created a free Divorce Guide to help you have those awkward but important financial conversations with more confidence. You can download it here.

Money doesn’t end most relationships overnight. Silence does.

    All the best,

    Vanessa
