Renowned Ghanaian media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, has opened up about her career journey and how her father initially wished she pursued medicine instead of broadcasting.

Speaking during the Konnected Minds Podcast on January 31, 2026, Nana Aba disclosed that although she excelled in science and had the grades to become a medical doctor, her heart was set on television.

“My father wanted me to be a medical doctor, but I told him I wanted to be a TV presenter. He said then we should see how it goes,” she said.

According to her, her father played a key role in shaping her interest in media, even if he was uncertain about her success in the field.

“He knew where the inspiration was coming from because he was giving me a lot of books to read, and watching CNN with him. My father was a big-time consumer of TV and he wasn’t too sure if I would make it on TV,” she stated.

Nana Aba explained that her academic strength in science made her father believe medicine was the safest path for her.

“He knew what my comfort zone was and it was science. I was really good at science in school, I got excellent grades, so he thought I was going to make a very excellent medical doctor,” she shared.

Despite this, she admitted she never saw herself as a medical doctor.

“I never imagined myself as a doctor because I think I would have been the most horrible doctor. I don’t have what it takes to administer what doctors do and I don’t have the patience they have,” she said.

She noted that although her father was not entirely pleased with her decision, he still allowed her to follow her passion.

Nana Aba recounted that her father’s doubts disappeared the moment he saw her on television for the first time.

“I knew what my safe space was, and my father supported me. He wasn’t happy about it and I could tell from his eyes, but the moment he saw me on TV the first time and I mentioned my name, he just said it’s better I didn’t go to the medical school,” she revealed.

Reflecting on parenting, Nana Aba said the freedom her father gave her has shaped how she raises her own son.

“The independence my father gave me worked, and that’s exactly what I’m giving to my son. I allow him to make his choices, when he goes, and he makes a disastrous mistake, he knows his mother is there because this is how we’ve all been brought up,” she added.
