The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has unveiled an initiative designed to provide free medical care and support to ailing musicians across the country.

This initiative, titled Musicians Help Musicians, is aimed at addressing the cases of musicians grappling with serious health challenges but lacking the financial resources to access proper treatment.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, President of MUSIGA Bessa Simons disclosed that the initiative was inspired by MUSIGA frequently receiving distress calls about musicians stranded in hospitals due to their inability to settle medical bills.

“There have been countless instances where we’ve received calls about musicians being detained in hospitals because they can’t afford their medical expenses. This initiative is our way of ensuring such situations become a thing of the past. With Musicians Help Musicians, we aim to make healthcare readily accessible and free for musicians who need it most,” he stated.

Explaining how the project will operate, Simons revealed a partnership with Care4Aged International, a Denmark-based medical firm, to provide professional training for selected Ghanaian volunteers who will serve as caregivers for musicians in need.

“This year, in collaboration with the Denmark-based medical firm, we are launching Musicians Help Musicians. As part of this initiative, doctors and nurses from Denmark will come to Ghana to train volunteers who have already signed up to become caregivers for musicians in need.

“These caregivers will be equipped to assist bedridden musicians, support those with mobility challenges, and provide essential aids such as walking sticks or other support devices,” he said.

He added that some of the trained volunteers will have the opportunity to travel to Denmark for hands-on experience before returning to Ghana to deliver high-quality care.

Simons also noted that the Danish medical partners will assess the Gyae Su Herbal Centre, a local medical facility, to identify any specific medical equipment needs.

“If, for example, the centre requires a dialysis machine, they will help provide it. The goal is to ensure that when musicians visit the facility, they can access all necessary healthcare services without worrying about the cost,” he explained.
