Former Black Stars midfielder, Mubarak Wakaso, is on the verge of a professional football return, with Hearts of Oak reportedly preparing to sign the ex-Villarreal star.

The experienced midfielder, who has struggled with injuries in recent years, is reportedly regaining his match fitness, prompting Hearts of Oak to target him as part of their bid to reclaim the Ghana Premier League title.

Wakaso has been without a club since January 2024, following his departure from Chinese side Shenzhen FC due to persistent knee injuries. His last competitive appearance was on August 23, 2023.

Although sidelined, Mubarak Wakaso has been training with Nania FC, which has caught the attention of Hearts of Oak.

Club insiders have indicated that they plan to carefully manage his workload, with the intention of using him primarily in key matches.

The 2021 GPL champions are hopeful that the 34-year-old’s vast experience will bolster their squad and enhance their chances of success in the 2024/25 season.

His presence is also expected to provide valuable mentorship for the club’s younger players.

Wakaso’s illustrious career includes stints at top European clubs such as Villarreal, Panathinaikos, Espanyol, and Rubin Kazan.

On the international stage, he earned 70 caps for Ghana, scoring 13 goals for the four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions.
