Media personality Nana Yaa Konadu has urged mothers to adapt to the changing dynamics of parenting while staying grounded in cultural values.

According to her, today’s motherhood is vastly different from what it used to be and no longer follows a fixed formula.

She was speaking at A Convergence of Mothers, a forum organized by broadcaster MzGee in Accra.

“Life is supposed to have a systematic transition. But it doesn’t always happen. Along the line came social media. We thought it would help us, but our mothers were naïve with social media and the new world, so things escalated too quickly in our time,” she said.

Comparing past and present, she noted that traditional motherhood came with structure, shared responsibility, and a communal approach to raising children.

“Those days, one could correct the wrongs of people’s children even before their biological mothers came in. But now, it’s not the case, we have boundaries.”

Today’s parenting, she said, is affected by human rights, rapidly changing technologies, and a shift away from communal oversight.

“Now our children are being taught by computers. Motherhood used to have a formula. Today, it doesn’t,” she added.

Nana Yaa Konadu also reflected on the changing roles of women, stating, “Back then, a woman was home as a housewife. Women were demeaned, they didn’t see our worth. But today, we have the opportunity to excel. We’re also working. So it’s more of a collaboration.”

While recognizing the advantages of modernity, she called for balance.

“We must uphold our culture and embrace modernity,” she said, noting that motherhood today demands more intentionality, flexibility, and support than ever before.

Her remarks were one of several powerful contributions at A Convergence of Mothers, which featured panel discussions and expert-led sessions on parenting, legal rights, mental health, education, and family life in Ghana’s changing society.
