The Assin Fosu District Court in the Central Region has remanded 28-year-old trader, Monica Ampomah, into police custody for three weeks after she allegedly inflicted deep cutlass wounds on her 10-year-old daughter.

The accused had noticed a whitish discharge in the child’s underwear for over two months and suspected sexual abuse.

Angered by the development, Madam Ampomah allegedly beat the Class Five pupil with a cane and a metal rod before inflicting a wound on her head, hand and finger with a cutlass.

Ampomah, who has been charged with causing harm, will be arraigned on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Matilda Osaah Buabeng, told the court, presided over by Abdul Majid Iliasu, that the complainant, Mr Gilbert Takyi, a nurse at St Francis Xavier Hospital, reported the matter to the Central North Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service after the child sought help from her school proprietress.

The court heard that on Tuesday, July 21, at about 0300 hours, the accused allegedly woke the child up and questioned her about the discharge from her vagina.

Dissatisfied with the child’s responses, she allegedly assaulted her with a cane and a metal rod before using a cutlass to inflict further injuries.

According to the Prosecutor, the child was reportedly driven out of the room around 0400 hours and later taken to St Francis Xavier Hospital, Assin Fosu, for treatment, after which a police medical report was submitted to DOVVSU.

Subsequently, Ampomah was arrested and cautioned, while the court ordered a mental examination to determine her fitness to stand trial.
