Legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Kojo Antwi has shared what motivated him to write a book after decades in the music industry.

In an interview on Citi FM, shared on social media on February 12, 2026, Kojo Antwi explained that his decision to write a book stemmed from the fact that most African musicians do not document their lives in books that can inspire the younger generation.

According to the “Mr Music Man,” while growing up as a young musician, he had hoped to read the stories of legendary singers such as Nana Ampadu and Agya Koo Nimo, yet there was no proper documentation of their lives, something he believes is a disadvantage to young artistes.

How Darkuman shaped the kind of music I make – Kojo Antwi

“Musicians like me don’t really talk about themselves. What you see is just a little caption in the newspaper. Someone like Nana Ampadu should have come out with a book. When I wanted to be a musician, I wanted to read something about Osibisa, and I wanted to read something about Hugh Masekela. Hugh wrote his book towards the end, before he passed. I also wanted to read about Agya Koo Nimo because he’s more of a lecturer, but there was nothing.

“And so, somewhere along the line, I felt the need to talk about what I’ve gone through because I’ve been privileged to meet all the giants in African music. African musicians don’t write about themselves, so I felt there was a need to come out with a book. I would say it took almost 18 years,” he said.

Speaking about his faith, the legendary musician noted that he is no longer a Rastafarian and now describes himself as a conscious African.

“I have lost count of the time because it is part of me now. I used to be a Rastafarian, but I believe I have become more of a conscious African, very Afrocentric,” he added.
