Mohammed Polo, a member of Ghana’s 1978 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has criticized the declining standard of the Ghana Premier League, insisting only one locally based player merits consideration for the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Polo made the remarks after watching the recent Super Clash between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium. According to him, the quality on display fell short of expectations for Ghana’s top-flight competition.

Speaking to Connect FM, Polo singled out Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the only Ghana Premier League player capable of earning a place in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 tournament in North America.

“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Polo said, adding that he did not enjoy the Super Clash due to what he described as substandard performances.

He further noted that despite Hearts of Oak playing with a man down, Kotoko failed to create significant chances, attributing the outcome to a lack of quality.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to name his final World Cup squad on June 1.
