Some officers of the Ghana Armed Forces on August 18, 2025, stormed the premises of the National Children’s Library at Airport to support the wife of a soldier who is attempting to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the Longest Marathon Reading Aloud (Read-A-Thon).

The officers, mostly dressed in mufti, were seen dancing and singing in solidarity with the GWR contender, Morkporkpor Fiador.

The 240-hour non-stop reading attempt by Fiador, a Ghanaian teacher with the Field Engineer ‘A’ Unit of the 5 Garrison Education Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces, began at 6:00 p.m. on August 18, 2025.

The event, which was initially scheduled for December 26, 2024, but postponed due to funding challenges, was rescheduled and officially commenced on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the Children’s Library in Accra.

Fiador received official approval from Guinness World Records to pursue the record attempt.

According to an email from GWR, her application was accepted under the title “Longest Marathon Reading Aloud” with strict guidelines provided to ensure the legitimacy of the attempt.

“Each point of the guidelines must be followed by anyone attempting this record. You must ensure that everyone involved in your record attempt, including participants, stewards, and witnesses, are familiar with the guidelines,” GWR emphasized in its correspondence.

The record, which requires participants to read continuously for days, will see Fiador attempt a staggering 240 hours of non-stop reading.

Fiador, who has previously taught at Apam Presby and 5BN Basic School, is widely admired for her passion for education and her commitment to inspiring young learners.
