WBF world cruiserweight champion Nick Midgley (14-3, 12 KOs) won the WBC Asia Silver heavyweight title by stopping Aniwat Ngonsai (13-13-3, 3 KOs) in the fifth round on Friday, July 31, at Nakornluang Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The fight was closely contested through the first four rounds, with the judges’ scores announced as 39-37, 38-38, and 37-39. Early in the fifth round, Midgley landed a powerful body shot that dropped Aniwat for an eight-count. The bout ended when the Australian fighter floored his opponent two more times, forcing the referee to stop the contest at 1:17 of the round.
In the co-main event, former WBA world title challenger Thananchai Charunphak (31-2, 16 KOs) earned a unanimous decision over multiple amateur gold medalist Phatthana Srisawad by scores of 97-93, 97-93, and 96-94. Thananchai is now ranked No. 2 by the WBC. His manager, Mr. Surachart Pisitwuttinan, is planning another world title opportunity for him later this year.
The event featured two professional boxing bouts and three Muay Thai fights and was promoted by Surachart Pisitwuttinan of Nakornloung Boxing Promotion.
