The royal visit brought very British weather to Washington on Tuesday, with rain spitting as King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived at the White House to be greeted by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Four ornate chairs were set up on a raised platform on the South Lawn, with lip reader Nicola Hickling telling the Daily Mail what the Queen commented to the First Lady when they sat down together.

‘Oh, it’s rather wet,’ the Queen appeared to say.

Melania agreed, replying, ‘It certainly is.’

The two spouses then shared a laugh.

‘We shall have soggy bottoms,’ Queen Camilla then appeared to say.

Melania then questioned what she had just heard from the British royal.

‘Soggy bottom,’ the First Lady inquired.

The term is regularly used in the Great British Bake Off, but generally means a damp behind.

The weather cleared up by the time the First Lady and Queen Camilla participated in a spouses’ event elsewhere on the White House’s grounds, in front of Melania’s renovated tennis pavilion, a project she took on during the President’s first term.

The two women walked together onto the tennis court, where some children were using virtual reality devices, while others stood in front of art displays.

As part of the First Lady’s broader ‘Be Best’ programming, she launched Fostering the Future Together, with one of the tenets dedicated to ensuring young people were both prepared to utilize emerging technologies and protected from its dangers.

During Tuesday’s program, youngsters could explore some of the UK’s top sites – including Buckingham Palace and Stonehenge – using Meta Quest headsets.

Pieces of the White House art collection, including the Winston Churchill bust and a portrait of John Adams, a former President as well as British ambassador, were on display.

The young guests were able to look at the artwork using Meta glasses.

Melania twice tried on a pair of the Ray-Ban-branded Meta glasses to look at the displays.

The Queen watched from her side.

The women didn’t engage with the press except for when a reporter asked the First Lady how she was doing on the heels of Saturday’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which left the annual affair in chaos.

‘Very well, thank you,’ the First Lady replied.

After the spouses program, the President and First Lady walked King Charles and Queen Camilla to their car, as the King was due on Capitol Hill to address Congress.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will return to the White House Tuesday night to participate in a state dinner, the first of the President’s second term.
