Noel Gallagher arrived at the Etihad Stadium at the weekend hoping to witness a repeat of his beloved Manchester City‘s FA Cup triumph, only to be sent packing to the soundtrack of the High Flying Seagulls.

That has been the story – no, not morning glory – of Brighton’s season. Fabian Hurzeler’s side sit third and are beginning to build a compelling case as the Premier League‘s most unexpected title challengers since Leicester City‘s remarkable triumph a decade ago.

Even Danny Murphy, rarely one for lavish praise, was impressed by what he saw after the City win.

‘They are such a smart team and they are an absolute pleasure to watch with the ball,’ he said on BBC‘s Match of the Day. ‘They are brave. They find a way. They are tactically very good.

‘No worries who they are playing. There’s no respect. They were willing to risk losing to win and that is what you want.’

Brighton’s squad is packed with a number of unknowns, courtesy of a scouting network that has been unearthing gems from across the globe for years. This time, though, with an energetic, charismatic coach in Hurzeler and a perfect blend of youth and experience, there is a growing sense that all the pieces may be coming together at exactly the right moment.

Here, Daily Mail Sport’s football reporter Tara Anson-Walsh takes a look at the players driving Brighton’s unlikely title charge and the stories behind how they ended up on the south coast…

    GK: Bart Verbruggen

A central tenet of Brighton‘s success this season, 24-year-old Verbruggen has six clean sheets in the Premier League, the joint-most alongside Arsenal‘s David Raya.

The Dutchman began his career with hometown club NAC Breda before moving to Belgium in 2020. Admired by former Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi for his ability to play out from the back, 6ft 4in Verbruggen arrived in England in 2023 for £16.3million, a Belgian league record fee for a goalkeeper.

Three years on, the player who grew up idolising Edwin van der Sar is unsurprisingly being mooted by Real Madrid as a potential long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois, while Bayern Munich and Tottenham also retain an interest.

    RB: Ferdi Kadioglu

The twinkle-toed 27-year-old owes his deft feet to his mother, a professional ballerina who travelled the world performing, as well as to a childhood spent playing tennis in the Netherlands.

After a difficult initial transition from the Eredivisie to Turkey in 2018, the arrival of Vitor Pereira at Fenerbahce in 2021 and a move to wing-back proved the catalyst for Kadioglu’s rapid rise.

Brighton regarded the Turkey international’s versatility as a key asset. Capable of operating at either full-back position or in midfield, he joined for £25m in the summer of 2024 after impressing at the Euros as one of Hurzeler’s first defensive signings.

    CB: Luka Vuskovic

For a 19-year-old, Vuskovic has already seen his fair share of the world, gaining experience in Poland, Belgium and Germany after emerging as one of Croatia’s brightest talents at Hajduk Split.

After becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in the Croatian top flight, the then 16-year-old was snapped up by Tottenham in 2023 and sent out immediately on loan to Hamburg when he joined the north London club two years later.

There, Vuskovic enhanced his reputation as a robust defender, aerial threat and aggressive presser. Brighton subsequently opted to break the bank, paying a club-record £50m and offering the promise of first-team football to secure his signature.

    CB: Lewis Dunk

Brighton through and through, Dunk joined the club from Wimbledon’s academy aged 12 and has gone on to make 531 appearances under nine managers before being rewarded with the captain’s armband in 2019.

Born in the city to a father who played non-League football in Sussex, Dunk has been the one constant throughout Brighton’s rise from League One to Europe. Unfazed both on and off the pitch, there is a running joke in the Dunk family that he doesn’t reply to his text messages for five days.

Now entering the twilight of his career, Dunk remains the embodiment of the club’s modern success, while Hurzeler relies on his influence to remind the younger players of its humble beginnings.

    LB: Olivier Boscagli

The France youth international grew up among the sports cars and yachts of Monte Carlo and broke through at nearby Nice before signing for PSV Eindhoven in 2019.

Admired within Brighton’s headquarters for his versatility, particularly his ability to play across the back line, Boscagli was a long-term target. Despite not being the tallest defender at 5ft 11in, his impressive spring gives him a strong aerial success rate, while his comfort on the ball was another attribute the Seagulls coveted. Brighton tested PSV Eindhoven’s resolve across multiple transfer windows before finally landing their man on a free transfer last year.

After a rocky first season largely spent on the bench last term under Hurzeler, Boscagli spent this summer doing the hard yards, checking in for pre-season already at, in his words, ‘close to 100 per cent fitness’, a trick which has certainly paid off. Moved from centre back to left-back this season, Boscagli has since appeared in every game.

    CM: Pascal Gross

It is no coincidence that Brighton’s title charge has coincided with Pascal Gross’s dazzling return from an 18-month stint at his boyhood club Borussia Dortmund in January. Ageing ‘like a fine wine’, Hurzeler recently said of the 35-year-old.

Gross has quite literally run the show this season, covering the most distance of any Premier League player, running 107.4km across the opening nine games.

A little-heralded German from Ingolstadt, Gross caught the eye of the Seagulls after managing to record more chances than any other player in the Bundesliga in the 2016-17 season despite his side getting relegated, and became the Seagulls’ first-ever Premier League signing at £3m.

Despite the youth of their manager, Brighton have long prized the importance of experienced players, and Gross has brought this in abundance back to the south coast.

    CM: Malick Yalcouye

The Mali-born midfielder was plucked out of obscurity by Gothenburg two years ago, bringing him in from Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, the club where former Manchester City icon Yaya Toure began his career.

Two years and a small sample size of just 15 senior appearances later, Brighton deployed their similarly talented scouting methods to bring Yalcouye to the Premier League. An immediate loan to Sturm Graz ensued, where he ended the season as the Bundesliga Young Player of the Year after being deployed as a box-to-box midfielder, a defensive midfielder and an out-and-out winger down both flanks.

This was followed by a disappointing campaign at Swansea last term, where he started just ten Championship matches as a holding midfielder.

Injuries to key players this season have seen Yalcouye thrust into the No10 role for the first time, and it appears Hurzeler may have accidentally stumbled upon a winning formula, with the 20-year-old recording three goals in 15 appearances in all competitions and emerging as one of Brighton’s standout performers so far this season.

    RW: Diego Gomez

The Paraguay midfielder joined as a 21-year-old from Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami last January and hasn’t looked back, notching ten goals and one assist in his first full season at the club.

‘He always told me to play forward and, when I have the ball, to have no fear,’ Gomez said of the Argentine in an interview soon after joining, a sentiment which clearly resonated as he proceeded to shoot, and score, from the halfway line against Crystal Palace last month.

Gomez, who broke through the ranks at Libertad in 2022, was admired for his impressive stamina as well as his physicality, an asset which Brighton felt would help him transition well into the Premier League.

Able to cover large areas of the pitch while remaining aggressive in pressing and duels, Brighton have been left clearly satisfied with the reported MLS record £11m they paid for him, and which will undoubtedly skyrocket amid reports he is drawing admirers from AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

    CAM: Yasin Ayari

Born into a footballing family, Ayari’s Tunisian father travelled to Sweden to become a footballer in his youth, and although this wasn’t a success, his dream transferred to his two sons, with Ayari’s younger brother plying his trade at AIK, in the Swedish top flight.

It was while a 21-year-old Yasin was also at AIK that he was spotted by Brighton’s technical team, who admired his versatility and technical skill, traits which have been honed by Brighton’s attack-minded, possession-based style of play.

The £3.5m signing spent a difficult first full season on loan in the Championship split across Coventry and Blackburn, although Ayari now credits that period for developing his mental resilience as he was handed a fresh start following the arrival of Hurzeler.

    LW: Maxim De Cuyper

Defensive frailties last season at left back, the position he had been signed to play in, meant that Maxim De Cuyper slipped down the pecking order at the Amex and saw his game time limited.

Yet injuries to wingers Yankuba Minteh and Kaoru Mitoma have seen the 25-year-old grasp an opportunity to play higher up the pitch with both hands, recording four goals and four assists in 14 appearances.

Developed through his childhood side Club Brugge’s academy, De Cuyper played as a winger until he was 14, and his form in that position this season will certainly be giving Hurzeler something to think about when his two explosive wingers return from injury.

    ST: Charalampos Kostoulas

The then 18-year-old was signed last summer for £31.4m, Brighton’s fourth-most expensive signing and a hefty investment in a teenager who had spent just one season in senior football.

But the Seagulls were investing in potential, and Kostoulas had just enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season at the club he had been at since he was 12, Olympiakos, scoring seven league goals – including one in the play-offs – as the Athens side won the Greek Super League.

Recognised for his ability to play in all positions across the front line, Kostoulas was admired by Brighton for his technical skill in linking play, beating defenders, as well as boasting the physicality of a player beyond his years.

He has already surpassed last season’s tally of two goals with three, plus a further three assists, in his opening nine appearances in the Premier League, and Brighton fans will be anticipating much more to come from this exciting youngster.
