MC Portfolio has opened up about what is undermining the careers of many musicians from Kumasi.

Speaking at the Kumasi Rising Music, Media, and Tourism Dialogue, Portfolio said Kumasi artistes often feel overshadowed and insecure when performing or engaging with colleagues from other regions.

He revealed that some influential industry figures have confided in him that musicians who openly identify as coming from Kumasi struggle to break through because of entrenched perceptions within the creative space.

“Inferiority complex is one thing that is killing musicians in Kumasi, and I think it is time we fight against it. I have had many complaints from industry professionals who personally told me that you won’t survive in the industry if you claim to be from Kumasi,” he said.

Apart from the artistes themselves, MC Portfolio called out sections of the media for fueling the problem, arguing that selective coverage damages the prospects of emerging talents.

“I am also talking to the media. We should play a role and shape the narrative. There are a lot of rappers and creatives here who will make it big on international stages, but the reports from our media are designed to affect them negatively,” he posited.
