Tottenham striker Mathys Tel has taken to social media to mock Manchester United following Spurs’ victory over the Red Devils on Sunday afternoon.

Tel played the full course of the game as Tottenham secured their first home win in the league in 15 weeks, leapfrogging United to reach the lofty heights of 12th in the table.

Making his Premier League debut, the Frenchman put in a lively display against the team he could have very easily played for, had things panned out differently in January.

Having come so close to joining Man United before making his switch to Spurs on deadline day, Tel hit back at fans that claimed he had ‘picked the wrong club.’

He accompanied this quote with the laughing face and clown emojis in an Instagram story, perhaps feeling today’s win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium vindicated his decision.

Tel was at the heart of one of the more tantalising transfer sagas of the winter window, with Tottenham, United and a host of other Premier League clubs keen to sign the wantaway Bayern Munich striker.

Ruben Amorim was on the verge of signing the Frenchman in January before his Spurs switch

After initially rejecting Spurs, Tel looked on the verge of joining Ruben Amorim‘s side, having reportedly agreed terms with the club.

However, United could not come to a solution when discussing a deal with Bayern, who were initially hellbent on shipping Tel on a permanent deal last month.

The move fell through, leading Tel to perform a dramatic U-turn on his assessment of Tottenham on deadline day, signing for the North London club on loan with a £45million option to buy.

Many United fans piled on Tel for joining their fellow Premier League struggler – and after a rough debut in Spurs’ Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool, supporters were quick to jump to the conclusion that he had joined the wrong team.

And while Spurs are enduring a hellish season, languishing in the bottom half of the table along with Man United, Tel did emerge on the winning side in the battle of the beleaguered giants on Sunday – leaving Red Devils fans with egg on their face.

Spurs had not won at home in the Premier League side November 3, a span of 105 days, but James Maddison‘s early goal saw all three points stay in London.

This was the first time Spurs had done the double against United in over 35 years and while they climb to 12th, the result leaves the Red Devils floundering in 15th.

This was no vintage performance from Spurs but it was a step in the right direction and they were warmed by the return of first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Whereas for United, it was simply more misery as they were left to rue an array of missed chances, still struggling to cope with the lack of firepower up top.

Amorim’s side are being punished for not securing a striker in January, with the Portuguese manager left with the unexemplary relics of the Erik ten Hag era.

Tel could have been exactly what they needed – but instead, he’s playing for the opposition, and he doesn’t seem too miffed about it.
