Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Matheus Cunha.

The Brazil forward has finalised his £62.5m move from Wolves, subject to visa and registration, and a statement was released on Sunday afternoon.

Cunha, 28, passed his medical last week and is United’s first statement of intent in a big summer as they seek to rebuild under Ruben Amorim.

Cunha netted 33 times in 92 appearances for Wolves after initially joining from Atletico Madrid on loan in January 2023.

He penned a deal permanently at the end of that season for up to 40m euros (£35m).

A brief statement from United read: ‘Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha.

The forward becomes Ruben Amorim’s first summer signing and has joined on a five-year deal

Amorim has been desperate to improve United’s attack after a miserable campaign

‘The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration. The 26 year-old has 13 senior caps for Brazil, and, in his club career, has made 270 appearances and scored 72 goals in the English, Spanish, German and Swiss top flights.

‘During two-and-a-half seasons at Wolves, Cunha has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances.

‘Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.’

It is believed United will pay Wolves in three instalments of £20.85m over two years after the Molineux club rejected an offer to stagger the payment over five years.

The Red Devils had already agreed personal terms with the Brazilian international and he could now receive Marcus Rashford’s No 10 shirt.

He was spotted at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester just hours before his signing was officially announced and was accompanied by his pregnant wife, Gabriela.

Cunha enjoyed an impressive individual campaign in the Midlands, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists in 33 Premier League appearances.

His total was significantly higher than any United player managed in the league, with Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo ending as joint top scorers with eight each.

Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked with a summer move to Manchester United

The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the season despite signing a new four-year deal with Wolves in February.

‘I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step,’ Cunha said in March. ‘I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.’

Mail Sport revealed last month that United were close to an agreement, while Cunha and Amorim were seen in conversation in April following Wolves’ win at Old Trafford.

Amorim is desperate to bolster United’s attack with Rasmus Hojlund misfiring, while Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho look set to depart.

United only scored 44 league goals, their lowest ever tally in the Premier League era.

But the Portuguese boss won’t have a large transfer fund and will offload players to free up cash, with the majority of his squad available for the right price. Indeed, their budget is understood to be around £125m plus whatever money the club can raise.

They want another striker, midfielder and No 10, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Ipswich’s Liam Delap touted for a move. Delap, though, looks bound for Chelsea.

Bees boss Thomas Frank admitted that Brentford will listen to offers for Mbuemo, 25, who would cost around £50m plus add-ons.

Joao Gomes revealed that he and Andre had been gifted watches by the outgoing Wolves star

Following the game, he wrote: ‘Wolves, what can I say to you?

‘What an incredible season. We didn’t get to where you deserve to be, but we did everything we could to make you proud. I love these guys.

‘Individually, it was the best season of my life. All of this was only possible because of all the dedication and love I have for this club.

‘I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season, along with @roberto_firmino and @gabriel.martinelli.

‘I made mistakes and got things right, but always because I lived this club so much. All I ever wanted was to do the impossible for Wolves. Another one is over.

‘And thank you all for all the affection.’

Cunha’s Brazilian team-mates Joao Gomes and Andre revealed on social media that they had been gifted Rolex watches by the outgoing attacker.

Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in January 2023 and scored an impressive 33 goals in 92 appearances for the club.
