The Mali Football Federation are planning to present a petition to the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) over the performance of referees who officiated their game against Ghana in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

According to a TV3 report, Mali are not happy with some decisions made by the referees, led by South Africa’s Badi Luxolo, during the game, which they believe were bad calls on the day.

It is reported that the officials’ main argument will be based on the goal scored by Alexander Djiku, which they are convinced was preceded by a foul that the referee overlooked.

Mali coach, Tom Saintfiet after the game on Monday, September 8, 2025, also stated that his attention was drawn to an infringement against his goalkeeper before Djiku’s goal by his officials.

“According to the people around me, the players, it happened after a fault just before the corner. Mohammed Kamara got pushed, that’s what they say. I didn’t see it, and then with the corner, I hear that my goalkeeper also got pushed.

“But again, I didn’t see it. That went fast for me, and I didn’t see any TV coverage. So, I don’t want to make any excuses for some things,” the Mali coach said.

After eight matches, Ghana lead Group I with 19 points, Madagascar are second with 16 points, Comoros are third with 15 points, while Mali lie fourth with 12 points.

Mali’s ambition of qualifying to the World Cup was shattered following the loss.
